Translation

When translating a piece of writing from one culture to the next is it possible to be completely objective? We try to use our experiences in comparison with the other cultures experiences in an attempt to come as close to a logical(truthful) interpretation as possible. Would it also depend on what kinds of experiences one has, like similarities, amounts of experience. You have to reflect on two traditional linguistic mainframes, each having there own history past and present mixed together. Is it possible to set aside ones opinion when trying to translate, or when combining the two perspectives together are we not left with a new product all together.
Am I making any sense? Or am I just confusing myself by metaphorically putting a sock on my foot and the other on my hand? Yes I'm sober! If you have any thoughts let me know.
